CHAPTER 18

By morning, I expected to feel stiff. Thankfully, only if I turned my head to one side did I notice any pain. I quickly checked the security feed for any Ford that showed up overnight. Yesterday, the metallic blue one was replaced by the purple one. The same car had driven past an hour ago.

Once Marina came for her car, I left for work. With two incidents following a Starbucks stop, I hesitated before giving in to my craving for a skinny mocha latte. Thankfully, no problems and no new warnings awaited me. I checked in with Elena and Lynisha to let them know Brenda was still in the hospital. I also asked Elena to call me when she had a chance. Within minutes, she called.

“Hi, Stacie. Is she alright?”

“She’s recovering. I’m guessing she’ll be back next week, if not sooner.”

“That what you wanted me to call for?”

“Yes and no. When customers call in and your staff answer the calls, are the calls recorded? I know some places say ‘This call may be recorded for quality assurance purposes.’ Are those calls truly recorded? Do you ever listen to them?”

“Yes, the customers get that warning. Calls are randomly recorded except for when it’s a new hire or if we’ve had a complaint. Unless there’s a concern, every fifth call would be recorded. If there’s a concern or a complaint, yes, I listen to them and give the person feedback. Why?”

“Leigh was stuffing the review box. She worked part-time as a dance instructor’s assistant and she gave them her full number, then requested they fill out the review form. Next question, obviously you somehow track how many reviews for each staff member. Is there any way to track those responses? Or to check if Jack or Peter left the positive – or negative – review?”

“OMG. Devious. And she got raises as a result. Oh, my. What about Brenda and Yvette?”

“That part’s not clear. Brenda wasn’t giving out her number, but she thinks Leigh gave it out. I think if they called Leigh’s number and she was on a call already, it would roll over. It’s a mess. Is it possible to pull any of the random calls to those three reps?”

“Uh. I guess. I’ll see what I can find out. That’s unbelievable.”

“Just curious. Let me know what you find out about the recordings, please.”

“Will do. I think we may need to start checking all of them. You have no idea how painful that is.” She groaned.

I sat back and shuddered at the thought of having to listen to even parts of the calls. I shifted my attention to my spreadsheets and emails, pushing Leigh’s murder and Yvette’s disappearance out of my mind. As usual, Jillian’s arrival provided a needed break. She was followed by Trina and Ronnie.

Ronnie sat down, shook her head, and exhaled. “Upper admin is freaking out over the murder. Stacie, has O’Hare filled you in on how close they are to identifying the killer?”

“Afraid not. As far as I know, he has some possible leads that may or may not pan out.
